It's the one with the alligator on the tailpiece.Īfter 1976t, when we talked about memorable shows from the old days there was fairly general agreement: Favorite large, outdoor show – Kezar Stadium, 5/26/73. Jerry seemed especially energetic, and I later read had taken delivery on a new guitar (his 1st custom-made?) and played it for the 1st time on stage that day. They didn't disappoint, opening with a rousing "Promised Land" and one of my personal favorites, "Deal". We cooked in the sun, passing our 2 wide-brimmed hats around the circle and waiting for the Dead. No one in our group had heard of Waylon Jennings, but a lot of people went out and bought a Waylon Jennings album the next day and I was one of them. The afternoon started with New Riders of the Purple Sage, a Dead "family band" that originally had Garcia on pedal steel. You could tell the people who had been at the show the next day because we were all sunburned on the front. From where I stood, maybe 30 yards from the stage, I didn't see any problems. The power of the joy and enthusiasm in that music rolls right over any "problems". Yes, the vocals are somewhat under mixed, and with the right headphones I could probably hear the buzz, too. When the band was that far "in the mood", they could do no wrong. I don't know what to say about the music I think it speaks for itself. It was her 1st and only Grateful Dead show it was like she picked Secretariat at the Kentucky Derby! No one brought enough water or sun hats or rolling papers, but whatever was needed, if someone in our group didn't have it, the folks next door probably did. My sister wasn't going to be able to come, but suddenly she got a ride up from LA and a ticket for her appeared. In addition to stellar music from 3 bands all playing at their performing peaks, the changes and energies in our group of about 10 people seem to be well-synchronized. In fact, I lived 3 blocks from the venue, up the hill next to the UC Medical Center. Yes, I was lucky enough to have attended this show. ¡ One of the most memorable concert experiences of my life ! I believe both are true.Īfter the sun set behind the band we walked back to my VW Wesfalia camper, cracked open San Miguel Darks from the icebox, and drove to the Mexican Restaurant on the north side of Santa Cruz and continued comparing notes. I wasn’t surprised that could be a thing at such an event, but I also had to consider that it could have been more to do with his state of mind. ![]() My Girlfriend and I weren’t far from the stage but my roommate and his gf sought out a spot much closer that he later claimed had some kind of swirling surround sound thing going on. I couldn’t believe how much energy both dancers had! My roommate described one of them as “Water Woman” because of the sinuous moves she had, as if her arms didn’t just have joints but could bend any way she wanted. Framing that were two towers with a female dancer on each one 25 or more feet up. I was a big McIntosh and JBL fan, so the wall of amps and speakers was the first thing that struck me.
